Ubuntu How To Install Apache, PHP, MySQL, and PHPMyAdmin

Step by step guide to install Apache, PHP, MySQL and PHPMyAdmin on Ubuntu Server Lucid. Make sure you are connected to the internet.

1. SSH into your server and login as root with this command

su

2. Update your repositories list

apt-get update

3. Install Apache

apt-get install apache2 apache2.2-common apache2-doc apache2-mpm-prefork apache2-utils

4. Install PHP

apt-get install php5 libapache2-mod-php5 php5-common php5-gd php5-mysql php5-imap php5-cli php5-cgi php-pear php-auth

5. Install MySQL

apt-get install mysql-server mysql-client

when MySQL is being installed you will be prompted to supply a root password

6. Install PhpMyAdmin

apt-get install phpmyadmin

follow the wizard and configure phpmyadmin

7. Installation finished, now restart the servers

/etc/init.d/mysql restart
/etc/init.d/apache2 restart

8. Create a new PHP file /var/www/index.php and paste the code below

< php phpinfo(); >

Good job, you are finished, view your website in the browser, you can also login to phpymadin

How To Install Vmware Tools on Ubuntu Server Lucid

1. Power on the virtual machine. After the guest operating system has started, prepare your virtual machine to install VMware Tools. Choose VM > Install VMware Tools. Inside Vmware Workstation, make sure CD/DVD is connected.

Note: If you have a previous installation, delete the previous vmware-distrib directory before installing. The default location of this directory is
/tmp/vmware-tools-distrib.

2. Login to Ubuntu Server

su

3. Mount the CD Image

mkdir /media/cdrom
mount /dev/cdrom /media/cdrom

4. Copy VmwareTools

copy VMwareTools-5.0.0-<xxxx>.tar.gz /tmp

5. Unmount the VmwareTools Image

umount /media/cdrom

6. Uncompress the TAR

cd /tmp 
tar zxf /mnt/cdrom/VMwareTools-5.0.0-<xxxx>.tar.gz

7. Install Vmware tools, just answer the configuration questions

cd vmware-tools-distrib
./vmware-install.pl

Congratulations you are finished!

DIY Third Hand - Budget Mod

I really don't want to spend $40+ on a third hand, so today I walked down to the local hardware store and picked up some parts to build my own. I left spending around $5, granted I have a few of my own tools to build it. You will need a tube cutter and a drill.

Alligator Clips - 2 inch, $1 gets you four.

6-32 x 3/8 Screws, Washer and Wing Nuts, 8 pack about $3 for all

Cotter or Split Pins - 1/8 x 2

I picked up 3 of them they are about 25 cents each.

Aluminum Tube - 1ft, about $1

Check the diameter of the aluminum tube, you want it to fit tight inside the back of the alligator clip. Also when you cut the tube make sure you are leaving enough room for the Cotter Pin to go all the way through.

The Base (free)

I had a broken clamp light laying around so this is what I used for my base, but you can pick up a plastic clamp for under a $1. Just make sure you get a big enough one to drill a hole in the top handle.

Third Hand Assembly

Cut the tubing to your desired size
Attach alligator clip to the tube
Insert a pin to the opposite side of the tube
Drill a hole on top of the clamp handle
Screw the arm to the base, use a wing nut for easy adjustments

On the hunt for a free virtual midi driver solution is no joke. I am going to take a minute and build another page with links and keywords for "free virtual midi driver" aka "virtual midi driver" and "virtual midi".

Well I hope somebody out there on the internet finds this page while on the same adventure I was. After a few long frustrating hours of digging around all the junk, I finally found a couple solutions that are truly free. Non of that fake free crapware.

4 virtual midi ports for the price of free. Grab the update and get 12 ports. This projected once hailed MapleMidi has pretty much died and fell off the edge of cyberspace. Although there doesn't seem to be much of a community or updates around the software, the software still works beautifully. There is also an API to dork around with if you are a coder and want to get even more out of MapleMidi.

The last one I found is called MidiYoke it seems to work very well with Vista/Win7 and Windows XP. The new version provides 8 virtual midi ports, and the website is still active with a forum! That's good right?

Convert AVI to iPhone MP4

There are a ton of commands out there for ffmpeg and how to convert avi files to mp4, specifically for viewing on the iphone. Well most of them did not work for me. My last attempt to find a quick command was at commandlinefu, and it worked, very well even. So here it is, thanks cmdfu! Grab ffmpeg, you will need it!

4:3 Conversion

Mongoose the simple web server

Mongoose is an easy to use web server. It can be embedded into existing application to provide a web interface to it.

Mongoose web server executable is self-sufficient, it does not depend on anything to start serving requests. If it is copied to any directory and executed, it starts to serve that directory on port 8080 (so to access files, go to http://localhost:8080). If some additional config is required - for example, different listening port or IP-based access control, then a mongoose.conf file with respective options (see example) can be created in the same directory where executable lives. This makes Mongoose perfect for all sorts of demos, quick tests, file sharing, and Web programming.

This has to be one of the simplest free open source proxy servers I have come across that supports linux/unix and windows operating systems. It is easy to use and configure, it's portable so no installation is required, although on the downside it doesn't look like the development and community has been very active lately, but if you have perl coding skills you could fix any bugs yourself. If you know of any better simple proxy servers please let me know!

iPhone Flash Video Plugin For Safari

First let's get one thing straight kids, this is a plugin for Safari like the popular download plugin floating around out there. Let it be known this plugin ONLY works on Flash Videos, like on Youtube. It basically re-encodes the flash video into an inline viewable mp4 video. So this is by no means a completely flash player, it's basically an almost realtime flash video converter.

If you are like me and visit reddit, or other social news sites and come accross videos that you can't watch then you will really appreciate this.

Since Apple loves to prohibit you from basic functionality, I was forced to go dig around the interwebs for some software.

I found this rad software called floola that will allow you to copy anything from your iPhone or iPod to your computer!

The best part it's completely free. I found a few others out there, but most of them sucked or where paid versions. Most of them that can't even do as much as floola.

Download it and give a whirl, floola currently supports Windows, Mac (10.3 and above) and Linux (GTK)!

Ubuntu users:
